1. MEE REBUS
Mee Rebus is a very popular noodle dish in Malaysia. It is made of curry base of beef, ground dried shrimps. Also with lemon grass, coriander, galangal and slices of hard boiled eggs. And it is said that this dish tastes even better a few days after the soup has been cooked.
2. LAKSA JOHOR
Laksa Johor, a local dish in Johor made of coconut milk, kerisik (toasted and grounded coconut paste), dried prawns, lemon grass, galangal and spices. The dish contains spaghetti and is garnished with onion slices, bean sprouts, mint leaves and cucumber.
3. OTAK-OTAK MUAR
Otak-Otak Muar. This is a grilled fish mousse that can be found anywhere in Malaysia. Made of tiny fish flakes that are packed with numerous spices and wrapped tightly in banana leaf. It is grilled over an open fire and become the orange fish cake in result, an absolute delicious appetiser.
4. BRIYANI GAM
Originally from India, Briyani Gam became famous in Johor with slightly different spices to suit the Malay palate. Vegetables and meat - either beef or chicken are sauteed with spices and added to par boiled rice. The fragrant yellow coloured rice is often served with hard boiled egg and a selection of gravies.
5. ASAM PEDAS JOHOR
Typically a fish specialty, Asam Pedas Johor is a meat cooked in a red gravy of tamarind juice, dried chillies, ginger and turmeric. Eaten alongside the local rice meal, this dish can be found in every Malaysian states.
6. KACANG PAUL
Kacang Paul of Malaysia is said to be the South East Asian version of an Egyptian national dish, the Ful Medames. The dish is savoury stew of the red pol beans and minced beef in a mixture of Asian spices. Topped with chunks of raw red onions, green chillies and a fried egg, the dish is best enjoyed with crusty thick bread.
