In the state of Sarawak in Malaysia, Pua weaving is a much respected craft to the Iban people. It is not just a symbol of their rich culture and history, it is also one of the most popular handicraft exports of this state. While you are in Sarawak, you can fill your shopping bags with Iban Pua crafts.
1. PUA KUMBU
Pua Kumbu represents the soul of Iban culture. It is a woven mythological tale about the weaver and her affiliation with the spirit world. In this culture, a woman who has woven a superb Pua Kumbu achieves a social status equal to a great warrior.
2. PUA KARAP
Pua Karap is another kind of Pua equally important in the Iban community. The Pua Karap makes up most of the attire. Although sometimes the skirt is made of Pua Kumbu or Pua Sungkit, Pua Karap is the preferred choice as its refined weaving technique adds texture to the Ngajat performances, a traditional dance of the Iban tribe.
3. PUA SUNGKIT
Pua Sungkit is exactly the same as Pua Kumbu. The only difference being the weaving technique and process. Most Pua Sungkit are smaller in size and crafted into high-value items like the costumes worn by dancers of higher calibre during special occasions.
